Upgrade from FreeRTOS to SAFERTOS® with new video resources from WITTENSTEIN high integrity systems

A new video series is now available to aid those looking to move from the FreeRTOS kernel to safety critical RTOS, SAFERTOS®, from WITTENSTEIN high integrity systems (WHIS). The videos are part of a larger resource offering from WHIS including a workshop demo, technical manuals and a white paper. All these are available from the WHIS website to help with the upgrade process.

The most recent addition to these resources is a series of videos. SAFERTOS is a pre-emptive, safety critical Real Time Operating System (RTOS) available pre-certified to IEC 61508 SIL3 and ISO 26262 ASIL D. SAFERTOS® is used internationally across a range of safety critical applications and is renowned for its high quality, delivering unprecedented levels of determinism and robustness to embedded systems whilst using minimal resources.

As the FreeRTOS kernel and SAFERTOS share the same functional model the upgrade process is straightforward. Many WHIS customers prototype using the FreeRTOS kernel, and convert to SAFERTOS at the start of their formal development phase. The ease of the upgrade can be put to the test with no commitment to purchase SAFERTOS. WHIS have a fully functional binary walkthrough demo that contains a FreeRTOS project, a SAFERTOS project and an app note that explains the process. This can be downloaded for free and then followed along in detail with the new videos that show step-by-step screenshots.

FreeRTOS is an open source real-time operating system, or RTOS. Developed in partnership with the world’s leading chip companies over a 15-year period, the FreeRTOS kernel is a market leading RTOS, and the de-facto standard solution for microcontrollers and small microprocessors. FreeRTOS was created by Richard Barry during his time working for WHIS. Since then, WHIS has offered FreeRTOS services including commercial licensing and porting, as well as the popular upgrade path to SAFERTOS for applications that require certification to IEC 61508 or ISO 26262.
